The Hollow Frontier Books in Order

The Hollow Frontier is where Reavis Z. Wortham lets his western instincts turn strange. This is not a traditional frontier series with a clean line between good men and bad men. It is a haunted West, full of curses, old wounds, harsh country, and the feeling that the land itself remembers every violent thing done on it.

The series opens with Comancheria, and its central figure is Texas Ranger Buck Dallas. Buck was supposed to die, and in one sense he did. Cursed by the Comanche witch doctor Twisted Root, he falls with the sun and claws out of the earth again at dawn, trapped somewhere between life and death. Riding beside him is fellow Ranger Lane Newsome, who stays in the saddle with Buck even after things get far beyond anything a normal lawman should have to face.

This is not a clean white-hat western.

The first book sends Buck and Lane across a brutal, haunted frontier with two linked tasks: find a missing girl named River and get a pregnant woman to a hidden spring that might save her. The farther they ride, the stranger the company becomes. Mystics, mercenaries, broken wanderers, and older, darker forces keep joining or blocking the trail. Gunfire still matters in this world, but so do curses, visions, and whatever is waiting out beyond the campfire light.

What makes the series interesting is that the supernatural hook does not replace the western heart. Buck is still a Ranger with a duty to carry. Lane is still the kind of partner who has to decide, day after day, what loyalty costs. Even with horror elements in play, the story keeps circling back to justice, survival, and the chance of redemption for people who have already been through too much. That keeps the book from feeling like a gimmick mash-up.

Expect a darker tone here than in Wortham's other series. The atmosphere is heavier, the stakes are often mythic, and the danger comes from both men and things older than men. But it is still readable in the same plainspoken way, with strong forward motion and characters who feel grounded even when the world around them is not. If you like weird westerns, supernatural frontier quests, and Texas Rangers forced into impossible country, this is the series that shows Wortham pushing into wilder territory.
