Series background & context
The Highland Brides is Tanya Anne Crosby's core medieval Scottish romance series. Set in twelfth-century Scotland, it follows the MacKinnons, the Brodies, and the people drawn into their world of clan obligations, English pressure, dangerous travel, and hard-won love.
It begins with The MacKinnon's Bride. When Iain MacKinnon's son is taken by the English, he seizes Page FitzSimon as leverage. Page soon learns that her own father will not rescue her, leaving her to make the long journey north with a man she has every reason to distrust. Their story introduces the family, the landscape, and the fierce loyalties that shape the series.
Each following book gives another couple a turn in the spotlight. Lyon's Gift pairs knight Piers de Montgomerie with rebellious Meghan Brodie. On Bended Knee follows Seana and Colin Mac Brodie, while Lion Heart centers on Broc MacKinnon and Elizabet. Highland Song and Catrìona extend the family circle, and MacKinnons' Hope serves as a later return to familiar characters rather than a starting point.
The Highlands are more than scenery here. Castles, forest paths, contested lands, and clan borders affect who can travel safely, whom people can trust, and what a marriage might mean. The series mixes romance with kidnappings, feuds, political tensions, and the everyday work of protecting a household.
Expect strong personalities. Crosby's heroines don't quietly accept the roles assigned to them, and her heroes are often capable men who need to learn that protection is not the same as control.
Start with The MacKinnon's Bride. The romances each have their own central couple, but reading in order makes the recurring friendships, family histories, and later appearances much more satisfying.
