The Grave of Empires Books in Order

The Grave of Empires is built around one of Sam Sykes's strongest leads, Sal the Cacophony, an outlaw, former mage, and walking disaster with a gun in one hand and a grudge in the other. Her magic has been stolen, the people she trusted most betrayed her, and what she has left is willpower, a weapon, and a list of names. If you want a patient, balanced hero, this is not that series. Sal runs on fury, pain, sarcasm, and momentum.

That is exactly why the books work.

The setting is the Scar, a blasted borderland trapped between rival empires and scarred by long magical warfare. It is the sort of place where rogue mages vanish, disgraced soldiers drift, and free cities cling to survival however they can. That gives the series a great visual and tonal mix, part epic fantasy, part gunslinger story, part wrecked industrial frontier. There are mages, monsters, airships, border wars, machinery, and old wounds everywhere you look.

Seven Blades in Black lays down the core pattern. Sal is hunting the seven mages who ruined her life, and revenge is the simple version of the plan. The harder version is surviving the Scar long enough to carry it out, especially when politics, armies, and old betrayals keep getting in the way. Ten Arrows of Iron widens the scope through a heist tied to the famous airship fleet of the title, and Three Axes to Fall cashes in the cost of every bargain Sal has made. Across the main trilogy, the world keeps getting bigger even as her choices keep getting narrower.

The novellas are useful because they show the same character from different angles. The Gallows Black drops Sal into the free city of Last Word, where a revenge job becomes a civic disaster. The Iron Dirge sends her toward a remote town loaded with secrets, a bandit queen, and a migrating beast. Dream of the Falling Axe brings her into another frontier crisis where people ask for help without fully understanding what kind of help Sal usually gives. None of these stories softens her, but they do show how the series world works outside the main novels.

The tone is bloody, sarcastic, and grief-struck without losing its sense of fun. Sal talks like someone who expects the worst and still enjoys needling it. Under the swagger, though, these books care a lot about betrayal, friendship, the stories people tell about themselves, and the price of building your whole life around revenge. That is what gives the series its weight.

So this is fantasy for readers who like huge worlds but want a nasty, personal voice leading them through it. Magic is powerful here, but attitude counts for a lot. So does stubbornness. In Sal's hands, both are usually dangerous.
