Series background & context
From the very first page, The Gateway Trackers drops you back into the World of the Gateway after the events of the original trilogy. Jess and Hannah Ballard think they have paid their dues to the Durupinen, the secretive clan of women who open Gateways so spirits can move on. Instead of being allowed to fade into normal life, they are ordered into a new role as Trackers, field agents who hunt anyone willing to twist the spirit world for power or profit.
As Trackers, the sisters spend far less time in the classroom and far more on the road. The series leans into investigation and undercover work, while keeping the ghostly rules and rituals that made the earlier books feel so grounded. Each mission forces them to balance their duty to the dead with the politics of Durupinen councils and the rigid guardians, the Caomhnóir, who believe they alone should decide how the Gateways are used.
Whispers of the Walker sends Jess and Hannah deep into the American South, posing as followers of a spiritual guru who promises his flock access to their lost loved ones. What begins as a sting on a suspected con artist quickly reveals a threat that reaches far beyond one compound. Plague of the Shattered returns them to Fairhaven Hall for a rare gathering of the Northern clans, where an unseen force stalks the corridors and turns the castle itself into a trap.
In Awakening of the Seer, the focus widens to politics. Hannah learns how brutal the fight for a seat on the Durupinen Council can be, while Jess starts to glimpse possible futures she may not be able to change. Later books push the sisters out into the wider world: to London, where haunted museums hide twisted Castings in Portraits of the Forsaken, and to the remote prison fortress of Skye Príosún in Heart of the Rebellion, where a brewing uprising threatens both guardians and Gateways.
Soul of the Sentinel and Gift of the Darkness shift the questions from external enemies to the nature of the Durupinen gift itself. Strange runes, ancient spirits, and warnings from the past suggest that the system Jess grew up fighting to protect may be built on a terrible bargain. By the time Rise of the Coven begins, the balance of power between Durupinen and spirits has changed, and experiments in new magic hint that even hard won victories can have dangerous side effects.
Across all these stories, the series blends case of the week thrills with a slow, emotional reckoning over who should control the line between life and death.
Readers who enjoyed the friendship, family drama, and ghostly stakes of the Gateway Trilogy will find the same heart here, just aged up a little. Jess, Hannah, Finn, Milo, and their allies have to juggle love lives, trauma, and ordinary growing up alongside poltergeists, necromancers, and fragile political alliances. The result feels less like a sequel tacked on to a finished story and more like watching familiar characters grow into the roles they were always heading toward.
