Fred Saberhagen's Sherlock Holmes books sit at a fun corner of his larger Dracula work. They are Holmes pastiches, yes, but they are also Dracula novels, which means deduction has to share the page with blood, folklore, and a narrator who already knows that the world is stranger than Sherlock Holmes would prefer.

The first attraction is obvious. Holmes and Watson make natural investigators. Dracula makes a very unnatural problem. In The Holmes-Dracula File, Saberhagen pushes them together through a case involving bloodless deaths, criminal plotting, and a fresh angle on the events surrounding Stoker's vampire. In Seance for a Vampire, he brings the trio back for another Victorian mystery with spiritualist overtones and old unfinished business.

What keeps these books working is balance. Holmes is never reduced to a bystander, and Dracula is not just a monster used for atmosphere. Each brings his own method. Holmes notices patterns, questions testimony, and pulls stage tricks apart. Dracula understands motives, ancient grudges, and the kinds of fear polite society refuses to name aloud. Watson, as usual, has the hardest job, keeping up with everyone.
