Author bio
Terry Mixon writes the kind of science fiction that likes to get its boots dirty. His books are full of soldiers, ship crews, spies, scavengers, and people trying to make hard calls under pressure. Even when the scale gets huge, ruined empires, alien relics, wars for whole star systems, the stories stay close to the people inside the machinery.
Before he became a novelist, Mixon spent years in jobs where systems, discipline, and consequences mattered. He served as a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division. After that, he worked alongside flight controllers in the Mission Control Center at NASA's Johnson Space Center, supporting the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, and other human spaceflight projects for almost two decades.
That background shows.
His fiction has a practical feel to it. Characters worry about command, training, logistics, equipment, and whether the plan will still hold together once the shooting starts. That does not make the books dry. It gives them weight. When a captain makes the wrong call, or the right one at a terrible cost, Mixon usually knows how to make it land.
He also came to writing later than a lot of authors do. By his own account, he was a long-time reader who eventually decided to sit down and tell a few stories of his own. That late start seems to have helped him. His work often reads like it was written by someone who had already spent a good part of life watching how institutions work, and how people behave when they are tired, cornered, or responsible for someone else.
A good place to see that is Empire of Bones, the novel that launched his best known series. It opens with the wreckage of an old human empire and turns that setup into a long-running mix of fleet combat, political strain, and exploration among dangerous ruins. Books like Veil of Shadows and Command Decisions build on that foundation, while later entries keep widening the war and the mystery behind it.
He does not stay in one lane, though. Heart of Vengeance, written with Glynn Stewart, leans into revenge, mercenary work, and Solar System politics. Liberty Station starts much closer to present-day Earth, then pushes into alien technology, hidden agendas, and a race toward the stars. With J.N. Chaney, Mixon helped build The Last Hunter and The Forgotten Ship, two collaboration-heavy series that mix military action with old secrets, strange technology, and very bingeable momentum.
He also knows when to scale things down.
A book like Scorched Earth trades starships for a collapsing power grid and shows the same interest in pressure, survival, and ugly choices at street level. Across all these series, Mixon keeps returning to a few things readers tend to come for on purpose: capable people, escalating trouble, old things waiting to be found, and enemies that are often smarter than anyone hoped.
These days, he lives in Texas with his wife and what he has memorably called a pounce of cats. That small note fits the books pretty well. There is seriousness in them, but also a sense that the person writing them enjoys the work, enjoys the genre, and knows exactly why readers come back for one more mission, one more jump, and one more bad idea that might save humanity.
