The Fixer Origins Books in Order

The Fixer Origins books are prequel-style thrillers that step away from J.C. Bannister just long enough to show where two key allies came from. Instead of pushing the main timeline forward, they explain how Duke and Joan became the sort of people who can survive in Bannister's orbit. That makes the series feel less like optional side material and more like character groundwork.

Duke centers on Davidson Duke Ellsworth, who starts out as many things, Army Ranger, language expert, computer genius, surfer, movie buff, but not an assassin. The book turns on a simple, ugly problem: a stranger knows far too much about him and can threaten everyone he cares about. Duke is forced into killing to protect his squad, his family, and possibly much more, and the story drops him into CIA maneuvering and Middle Eastern power plays before he has any time to get comfortable.

Joan shifts the focus to a very different kind of lead. Joan is already sharp, dangerous, and used to handling ugly work for money, but she has also spent years looking for something close to a home. In Europe, she thinks she has found an organization she can believe in and a boss who feels almost like family, until that operation turns toward human smuggling and she is sent after a man who complicates everything. Her book is built around loyalty, conscience, and the problem of what to do when the only people you belong to are doing something you cannot accept.

These stories care as much about the price of joining the team as they do about the mechanics of the mission.

Compared with the main Bannister books, the Origins novels feel a little more personal, even when the stakes are international. The action is still there, and so are intelligence games, criminal networks, and people with too much power, but the focus is tighter on formative choices. You get to see what Duke and Joan will do under pressure, what they will sacrifice, and which lines they are unwilling to cross. That makes their later roles in the larger series land with more weight.

They also work well as a bridge in either direction. If you read them before The Fixer, Season 1, they add backstory and deepen the first meeting with the wider cast. If you read them after getting to know JC's world, they fill in the emotional and moral history behind two of its most important players. Either way, expect fast, morally gray action thrillers that build character through bad options, hard calls, and the aftermath of both.
