Series background & context

The Five Syndicates is Parker S Huntington's mafia romance world, and it is the series that first introduced a lot of readers to her work. The books are connected, but each one shifts the spotlight to a new couple, a new branch of the criminal underworld, and a new mess of loyalty, violence, and desire. If you like interconnected standalones where side characters keep becoming the next main event, this is that kind of setup.

The series opens with Asher Black, where Lucy Ives, a college student with a rough past, accidentally calls the police on the mafia and ends up striking a fake engagement with the man sent to deal with her. From there, Niccolaio Andretti moves to Minka Reynolds and a hunted mafia heir who wants to be left alone, while Ranieri Andretti narrows in on a more intimate second-chance story between former best friends Ranieri and Carina. The books share a world, but they do not all aim for exactly the same flavor.

Then the scope widens again. Bastiano Romano brings in undercover work and family warfare through Ariana De Luca and a feared Romano enforcer. Renata Vitali works as a prequel novella, giving background to the relationship at the heart of Damiano De Luca, where old love, old betrayal, and old family conflict all come roaring back after years apart. Read together, the books build a larger picture of rival houses, inherited duty, and people trying to carve out something personal inside systems built on control.

The setting matters almost as much as the romances. This is a world of clubs, penthouses, family compounds, expensive dinners, hidden weapons, and business empires that sit right beside organized crime. Huntington likes the overlap between legitimate wealth and criminal power, and that gives the series its particular mood. These are not quiet books. Even when the emotional focus tightens around one couple, there is usually a threat in the background, a family expectation pressing in, or a deal going bad somewhere off-page.

The heart of the series is loyalty.

That loyalty gets tested in different ways every time, by fake relationships, sibling conflicts, hits placed on family members, undercover identities, and second chances that are never simple. The heroes are often dangerous, controlling, or emotionally locked down. The heroines tend to be funny, stubborn, practical, or brave enough to challenge men who are not used to being challenged. The tone stays firmly in dark, high-stakes romance, but there is enough variety between books that readers can find different entry points depending on what they like most.

You can read these books as standalones, but The Five Syndicates works best in order. That way the alliances, grudges, and recurring names build naturally. Start with Asher Black if you want the full ride. By the time you get to Damiano De Luca, the emotional payoff lands harder because you have watched this dangerous world expand one couple at a time.
