Series background & context
The Fionavar Tapestry begins in contemporary Toronto, where five University of Toronto students accept an invitation from a visiting lecturer and discover he is really a mage from another world. Taken to Fionavar, the 'first of all worlds,' they learn that what happens there ripples outward into every other reality, including their own.
Each of the five brings different wounds and strengths with them. Kevin masks insecurity with jokes, Paul is haunted by trauma, Jennifer wants to keep control of her life, Kim is pulled toward visions she doesn’t yet understand, and Dave finds belonging among the nomadic Dalrei horse‑clans. Their lives tangle with kings, mages, gods and spirits as a long‑chained Dark power stirs again beneath the mountains.
The trilogy treats Arthurian legend, Celtic echoes, Norse shades and entirely new mythmaking as parts of one vast, living tapestry.
The first book, The Summer Tree, brings the newcomers into Fionavar and shows what it costs to stand against drought, madness and fear; its centerpieces include a grim, willing sacrifice and a vision of a world that may yet be saved. The Wandering Fire widens the scope with an unnatural winter, the Wild Hunt and the summoning of King Arthur, while The Darkest Road carries the war against the Dark god to its final battles on the plain of Andarien.
Despite the epic sweep, the focus stays close to friendships, first loves, family ties and the stubbornness of ordinary people caught in mythic events. The Canadians change Fionavar, but it changes them more, forcing them to face grief, guilt, desire and the question of what they’re willing to give up.
Readers can expect big feelings, quiet character moments, and a steady sense that choices made out of love matter as much as any prophecy.
The trilogy stands alone, but later novel Ysabel quietly links back to it, picking up the idea that very old stories can surface in modern landscapes and families.
