The Fanglith Books in Order

The Fanglith books are among Dalmas's most accessible adventures. They lean younger than some of his heavier military novels, but they still have the same interest in power, culture, and what ordinary people do when the world turns dangerous fast.

The series begins with a refugee family living under the shadow of an oppressive interstellar regime. In Fanglith, when the parents disappear, the story falls to the children, especially Larn and his sister Deneen. Their search takes them to Fanglith, a brutally primitive planet populated by people drawn from eleventh-century Earth, which means medieval customs, violence, and misunderstanding at every turn.

That contrast is what gives the series its energy. Larn and Deneen come out of a science-fiction world of ships, surveillance, and political repression, then have to survive in a place where language, taboos, and personal strength matter more than any gadget they know. Their tools are wit, nerve, help from their ship's computer, and an unusually useful telepathic animal ally.

The stakes start personal, rescue the family, stay ahead of pursuers, and learn the rules before the rules kill you. But the second book, Return to Fanglith, widens the frame. The empire is striking back against rebellious colony worlds, and the story shifts from pure survival into resistance. Larn and Deneen are no longer just escaping events. They are being pulled into the work of building something that might stand against a larger power.

That makes the setting more than a gimmick. Fanglith is not just a dangerous planet. It is a place where advanced politics and older forms of violence crash together. Dalmas is good at showing how people improvise when none of their assumptions fit the ground under their feet.

The tone is brisk, adventurous, and easy to move through, but never weightless. These books care about family loyalty, political pressure, and the strange education that comes from being forced into responsibility too early.

If you want Dalmas in a lighter, faster mode without losing the ideas that make him interesting, this is a good series to try. It is part rescue story, part rebel tale, and part culture-clash adventure, with siblings at the center learning how much grit they really have.
