Series background & context

The Extinction Files is a two‑book sequence that asks what would happen if the next great pandemic wasn’t an accident at all. The story blends epidemiology, field work, and conspiracy as it follows the people who stand between a lab‑designed pathogen and the rest of the world.

At its heart is Dr. Peyton Shaw, a CDC epidemiologist who is used to running toward outbreaks when everyone else is running away.

In Pandemic, Peyton is called to investigate an Ebola‑like illness in a remote Kenyan village just as a mysterious submarine is found beneath Arctic ice. Her team works alongside local health officials and the WHO, only to discover that the infection is spreading faster than anyone thought possible. Around the same time in Berlin, businessman Desmond Hughes wakes up with no memory next to a dead security guard, his only clues pointing back to Peyton.

Their paths collide as they uncover proof that the virus, code‑named X1, was engineered and released to force the world to accept a so‑called cure. That cure is really a sophisticated nanotechnology platform, capable of rewriting the body and potentially stripping away human autonomy. Governments, corporations, and shadowy groups all have different plans for it.

In Genome, the focus shifts to the aftermath of the X1 pandemic and to the code hidden in human DNA. Peyton’s search for a countermeasure takes her from a sunken submarine in the Arctic to secret archives and high‑tech facilities, as she follows the decades‑old research of a geneticist who suspected that humanity’s past holds the key to its future.

Along the way, she has to weigh the lives of strangers against those closest to her, including Desmond and her own family. The question hanging over every decision is whether a drastic solution is justified if it promises to prevent extinction—or whether some lines simply can’t be crossed.

The series leans heavily on real outbreak science and logistics, but keeps the pace of a thriller, with cliffhangers, lab scenes, and global chases. It’s best read in order, starting with Pandemic and moving straight into Genome for the full picture.
