Series background & context

The Expanse is a nine-book science fiction story set in a future where people live across the solar system. Earth is crowded and politically powerful. Mars has built a hard-edged military culture around its dream of independence. The Belters who live and work in space keep the system running, but rarely get treated as equals.

Then something alien enters the picture.

The first book, Leviathan Wakes, brings together James Holden, an officer on an ice hauler, and Joe Miller, a detective on Ceres Station. Their separate investigations lead to the protomolecule, a discovery that threatens to turn old political resentments into open war. From there, the story follows the crew of Holden's ship, the Rocinante, through crises that grow from local violence to the fate of humanity itself.

Holden, Naomi Nagata, Amos Burton, and Alex Kamal give the series its center. They argue, make mistakes, and carry painful histories, but they keep choosing to look after each other. The books add many other viewpoints, including UN official Chrisjen Avasarala, Martian marine Bobbie Draper, scientist Elvi Okoye, and people on both sides of the Belt's fight for dignity and self-rule.

The science is grounded enough to make the setting feel physical. Acceleration hurts. Ships take time to cross space. Stations depend on fragile systems for air and water. That attention makes every chase, boarding action, and political standoff feel sharper. The series is full of strange alien technology, but it never forgets that people still have to eat, work, mourn, and pay their bills.

The larger plot changes shape several times. The early novels have mystery and cold-war tension. Later books move through a vast network of ring gates, opening worlds where colonists, corporations, and governments all want a claim. The final stretch deals with the return of empire and the danger hidden behind humanity's new reach.

It is space opera, but it stays personal.

The shorter fiction can be read alongside the novels or saved for later. The Butcher of Anderson Station, The Churn, The Vital Abyss, Strange Dogs, and Auberon all add useful history and side stories. For a simple first read, begin with Leviathan Wakes and follow the main novels in publication order.
