Later, the colder northern landscapes make the books feel even more exposed. Sea, weather, and distance are everywhere, which suits a story about fragile people trying to reach one another.

Sandy and the other Enceladons are not written as monsters to be defeated. They are strange, vulnerable, intelligent beings, and their arrival exposes what people do when faced with the unknown. Governments, military power, private money, and scientific curiosity all pull in different directions. The ongoing question is simple: will humans meet the alien with care, or will they try to own it?
