The Echo Archives is separate from Melissa Caruso's other fantasy world, so you can jump in here without reading anything else first. These books follow Kembral Thorne, a star investigator known as a Hound, whose job includes rescuing people who slip through weak places in reality into the Echoes, strange layered versions of the world. The deeper they fall, the stranger and more dangerous the rules become.

The Last Soul Among Wolves keeps the mix of mystery and fantasy, but changes the shape of the trap. This time Kem heads to an isolated island mansion for a will reading that turns into a deadly inheritance game, complete with cursed relics, old friends, and the kind of secrets that only get worse once people start dying. Across the books, one of the big pleasures is watching Kem solve impossible problems while her relationship with Rika keeps shifting from rivalry to reluctant alliance to something more personal.

Kem is brave, competent, and very tired.

That matters, because the series is not just about weird magic. It is also about work, responsibility, friendship, parenthood, and what it costs to keep showing up when everyone else is panicking. The guild structure gives the world a practical feel, while the Echoes let Caruso get delightfully strange with atmosphere and danger. One level down might be survivable. Several levels down, reality itself starts slipping sideways.

If you want the fantasy mystery side of Caruso's work, this is an easy entry point. The pace is quick, the clues matter, the banter is lively, and the stakes keep growing without losing the personal thread. Expect murder puzzles, reality-bending set pieces, a strong central romance, and a heroine who would much rather solve the case than become part of it.
