The Dystopia Triptych (Seanan McGuire) books in publication order

Sort:

3 books

1

Burn the Ashes

by Tim Pratt

2020

The second Dystopia Triptych volume collects tales set during the height of oppressive regimes. Characters in these stories are already living under the boot, fighting to hold on to identity, loved ones, or a single act of rebellion in the middle of catastrophe.

2

Ignorance Is Strength

by Tim Pratt

2020

First in The Dystopia Triptych, this anthology gathers stories set in societies sliding toward authoritarianism and unreality. Co‑edited by Howey, it asks how language, propaganda, and willful blindness pave the road to full‑blown dystopia.

3

Or Else the Light

by Tim Pratt

2020

Closing out The Dystopia Triptych, this anthology turns to what comes after the fall. Its stories imagine fragile new beginnings, hard compromises, and the lingering scars left by collapsed dystopias, asking what “better” might realistically look like.

Series background & context

Seanan McGuire's connection to The Dystopia Triptych is less about one standalone volume and more about how her work sits inside a larger themed design. The three books, Ignorance Is Strength, Burn the Ashes, and Or Else the Light, were built to move through the life cycle of a dystopia: the warning signs, the years inside the machine, and the uncertain work of what comes after.

That structure makes this page useful.

If you are here specifically for McGuire, the anthology order matters because the project order matters. Her contributions are part of a conversation with the other writers in the series, and that conversation changes from book to book. Early on, the emphasis is on drift and denial. In the middle volume, the pressure comes from endurance and compromise. By the end, the focus shifts to repair, aftermath, and whether damaged societies can build anything better.

That last part suits her especially well.

Across her broader bibliography, McGuire often writes about systems, stories, and communities under stress. The triptych gives her a shared frame for those interests. Even when you are reading many voices together, it is easy to see why this project would fit her. It asks not only how bad futures happen, but what people owe each other while those futures are forming and after they crack.

So this page is best used as a way to follow her through a multi-author experiment rather than as a separate self-contained series. Read the anthologies in order and let the before, during, and after pattern do its work. That is where the project really comes together.
