Series background & context

The Duke's By-Blows is built around the illegitimate children of the late Duke of Roseford, a group of siblings and half siblings who have spent their lives on the edge of respectability. They are connected by blood, but not protected by it, and that gives the whole series a restless, outsider energy.

Found family is the real heartbeat here.

From The Love of a Libertine onward, Michaels follows characters who do not fit neatly into polite society and often do not want to. Some have survived by becoming practical, guarded, or even dangerous. Some move through the world of clubs, investigations, and under-the-table dealings. Others carry old pain from being discarded, used, or underestimated. What unites them is the gradual realization that they do not have to stay alone.

That makes the romances feel especially satisfying. Morgan in The Love of a Libertine is a rogue trying to build something steadier. Selina in The Heart of a Hellion is hiding a thief's double life. The Matter of a Marquess and The Redemption of a Rogue keep that mix of high society and underworld tension going, with widows, scandal, danger, and characters who have learned not to trust too easily.

The setting matters too. These books move through country house parties, notorious clubs, dark streets, and drawing rooms where everyone is pretending not to know more than they do. Because the heroes and heroines are often straddling social lines, class difference becomes part of the tension instead of just decoration.

If you like Michaels at her best with damaged people, sharp desire, and a family that slowly becomes something chosen as much as inherited, this series is an easy recommendation. It has dukes in the background, but the real appeal is the people history tried to leave out.
