Series background & context

The Dogmothers spins out of The Dogfather, but it has its own rhythm right away. Once Daniel Kilcannon has spent years nudging his children toward love, a new matchmaking team takes over in Bitter Bark. This time the schemers are two grandmothers, Gramma Finnie and Yiayia Santorini, plus a pair of lovable dachshunds and a total lack of respect for other people’s privacy.

It works beautifully.

The series follows the grandchildren and extended branches of the Kilcannon, Mahoney, and Santorini families. Firefighters, chefs, campaign hopefuls, veterinarians, widows, runaways, and career-driven newcomers all get pulled into the Dogmothers’ orbit. These women may look like sweet old ladies, but they are absolutely running operations.

The tone leans cozy and funny, though the emotions are real. Some books are small-town contemporary romances. Some have holiday sparkle. Some bring in old grief, abandoned dogs, political baggage, or family secrets that never stayed buried for long. What keeps them feeling connected is the sense that Bitter Bark is one big, noisy, affectionate web of people who all know one another, and who will absolutely interfere if they think love is being mishandled.

The dogs matter as much as the people. Puppies, foster dogs, older rescues, and high-maintenance little scene-stealers keep pushing the characters together, softening them up, or exposing exactly what they have been avoiding.

If The Dogfather is about one father pulling strings for his children, The Dogmothers is about two grandmothers expanding the mission and having a lot more fun while they do it. The books stand alone, but together they build a very satisfying small-town romance world, full of family overlap, holiday energy, and the kind of warm chaos that makes readers want to move in and stay.
