Briar Dillon has survived negligent parents and childhood cancer but is left feeling broken, depressed, and tired of pretending she is fine. Alexander Thornton, a tech magnate with his own shadows, becomes obsessed with her and sets out to love every scar she hides.

Series background & context

The Dillon Sisters is a duet shared between Brynne Asher and Layla Frost, and Frost’s contribution, often titled Damaged or Love Me Damaged, brings her voice to a raw, intensely emotional corner of their shared world. While each book in the duet focuses on a different sister, together they trace how two women navigate danger, mental health, and obsessive love.

Frost’s story centers on Briar Dillon, a woman whose past reads like a checklist of traumas. Neglectful parents and childhood cancer did not leave her feeling brave or inspirational. Instead, they left her exhausted, haunted, and convinced that she is too much of a burden for anyone to hold on to. By the time readers meet her, Briar is hanging on by a thread, trying to make it through the day without slipping under.

Enter Alexander Thornton, a tech genius and philanthropist whose public image is smooth and polished. In private, he is far more complicated. When he crosses paths with Briar, he is struck by the pain he sees under her surface and becomes quietly, then openly, obsessed with her. He does not want to fix her so much as claim her, scars and all, and he is willing to bend his carefully ordered life around that need.

Their relationship is not light or easy. The book tackles depression, anxiety, self-harm, and the way trauma can make even simple tasks feel impossible. Alexander is wealthy and powerful, but the story does not pretend money alone can solve those problems. Instead, it shows him doing the unglamorous work of showing up, listening, and sometimes pushing when Briar cannot see a way forward herself.

At the same time, Damaged is still very much a romance. The connection between Briar and Alexander is intense, physical, and threaded with the kind of dark devotion that appeals to readers who like their heroes a little bit unhinged in the right direction. Frost leans into that tension, letting the story ask how far is too far when someone decides you are theirs.

Because this is part of The Dillon Sisters duet, there are echoes and overlaps with the first book, which follows Briar’s sister. Reading both gives you a fuller sense of the family dynamics and the danger swirling around them, but Frost structures her installment so that you can follow Briar’s arc on its own. The focus stays tightly on her internal world and the man determined to share it.

If you are coming from Frost’s other series, expect fewer jokes and more emotional gut punches here, along with her familiar commitment to consent, communication, and hard-won happily ever afters. The Dillon Sisters is where she lets her characters be messy and deeply human while still promising that love, in all its damaged forms, is worth the fight.
