Series background & context
The Devouring Gray is a two-book young adult fantasy set in Four Paths, New York, a small town surrounded by deep woods and old family history. It begins when Violet Saunders moves there with her mother after the death of her sister. Violet expects a difficult new school and a town full of strangers. Instead, she learns that her family belongs to one of Four Paths' founding bloodlines.
That matters because the founders' descendants have powers, and their families are tied to the Gray, an otherworldly dimension that holds a monster. The people of Four Paths live with that knowledge in different ways. Some protect the old traditions. Some resent the families who hold power. Some would rather pretend the danger is under control.
It is not under control.
Violet is drawn into the lives of other founder descendants, including Justin Hawthorne, Harper Carlisle, Isaac Sullivan, and May Hawthorne. Each of them has their own connection to the town's magic and to the mistakes made by earlier generations. Their relationships are uneasy from the start. Old betrayals, family expectations, grief, and anger all shape how much they can trust one another when the woods begin claiming new victims.
The first book, The Devouring Gray, is a mystery as much as a monster story. It slowly reveals why Four Paths fears the Gray, what the founders sacrificed to contain it, and what Violet's arrival might change. The setting is important here. Four Paths can feel isolated, watchful, and almost too familiar, which makes its supernatural danger hit closer to home.
The Deck of Omens continues soon after, as a corruption begins seeping from the Gray into the forest and the town's tensions become harder to ignore. May Hawthorne realizes the threat before many others do, while Violet, Isaac, Harper, and the rest of the group are forced to face both the magical crisis and the damage already done between them. It is a direct continuation, so the books should be read in order.
This series is for readers who like creepy small-town fantasy with a character-first focus. There are monsters and family secrets, but the real through line is a group of teenagers trying to decide what they owe their inherited past, and what they are willing to change. Start with The Devouring Gray, then move straight to The Deck of Omens.
