Series background & context
The Devils of Vitality is the series Feener herself has described as dark MM sci-fi college romance, and that label is accurate, but it leaves out the fun of the setup. Each book takes place on the same planet, in the same wider universe, and each one follows a different Devil of Vitality, a morally black young man with a talent for obsession and absolutely no instinct for moderation once he fixates on someone.
The books are standalones.
That part matters because it changes how you can read them. You can start with Echo, These Silent Stars, Call of the Sea, or one of the later Devil May books and still get a complete romance. But the shared setting makes reading more of them rewarding. Side characters reappear, the campus culture gets richer, and you start to see the different social worlds on Vitality, from mafia families to elite academic spaces to the orbit of the Academy itself.
The tone is dark but varied. Baikal and Rabbit in Echo bring one flavor of obsession. Rin and Kelevra push a much hotter, more explosive energy in These Silent Stars. Other books shift toward stalking, hunting, rivalry, or the slow realization that the person doing the chasing may be far more dangerous than anyone first assumed. Feener keeps the formula recognizable without making every Devil feel identical.
The planet itself is part of the appeal. Vitality feels lived in, with its own rules, power centers, and social hierarchies. Even though the romances are the draw, the setting gives the books texture. This is also where readers really see Feener lean into the idea that love, in her darker books, often looks a lot like fixation first and tenderness second.
If you want a long run of connected MM sci-fi romances that can still be picked up one at a time, this is a very easy place to get hooked. Pick the Devil whose setup appeals most, then keep going once the shared world sinks in.
