Series background & context
Gods of Mist and Mayhem is a dark portal fantasy series built around one sharp question: what happens when the person running from danger at home opens a door into something even worse? Jade Blakely is already under pressure when the story begins. She is the heir to a crime family, she wants no part of that future, and then she accidentally drags herself and her best friend into another world.
Unfortunately, that world has gods.
Feener makes good use of the portal setup here because it lets her keep two threats alive at once. Jade is not escaping her old life, not really. Her grandfather, her family expectations, and the leverage people have over her still matter. But now there is also a second realm where divine rulers make the rules, and Jade has drawn the attention of one of the worst among them.
The books are short and quick-moving, but the arc is continuous. Cornered, Captured, Command, and Obsession all build on the same central conflict, with Jade trying to protect herself and Amelia while figuring out what power, if any, she actually has in either world. The romance is dark, the stakes are personal, and the story keeps asking what freedom would even look like for someone who has always been owned by somebody else's plans.
If you want Feener in dark fantasy mode rather than sci-fi mode, this is a useful place to look. The energy is still recognizably hers, high pressure, dangerous attraction, and characters boxed into impossible choices, but the gods-and-portals frame gives it a different flavor.
