They help widen the emotional range of the setting and show that the apocalypse does not shape everyone the same way.

The tone is gritty, fast, and often brutal, but it is also surprisingly emotional. Nina and Mikey carry a lot of the heart of the series, and Riley keeps returning to love, loyalty, trauma, and the question of what surviving is supposed to mean if it costs you your humanity. There is action, gore, and plenty of close calls, but the books work because the characters are always carrying something personal through the chaos.
