Series background & context

The Dead Saga is Claire C Riley's long-running zombie world, and it is built around one of her most memorable heroines, Nina. From the beginning, Nina is not written as a soft or easy lead. She is angry, exhausted, hard to like in places, and all the more interesting because of it. When the world collapses and the infected take over, she leaves the relative safety of a barricaded city for the sake of a child and is forced into a road story that gets bigger, uglier, and more emotionally tangled with every book.

The early books are all about raw survival. Nina moves through a blasted landscape full of deaders, bad decisions, and strangers who may or may not help. But the series does not stay small for long. Mikey becomes central, found family starts forming around the edges, and the scope widens from simple escape to communities, rival groups, betrayals, and the ugly question of whether any safe haven can stay safe.

Humans become just as important as the undead, maybe more so. That is one of the clearest through-lines in the saga. The infected are everywhere, but the real dread often comes from what the living will do to keep control, hold territory, or feed their own warped needs. Groups like the Savages push that fear to the front, and later books lean into war, shifting alliances, and the cost of trying to protect the people you love in a world that keeps grinding them down.

There is a lot of material here, and the extra pieces matter. Companion titles like Odium 0.5, Odium 1.5, Odium 2.5, and Odium Bites deepen the world and show how different survivors experience the fall. They are not just add-ons for the sake of it. They help widen the emotional range of the setting and show that the apocalypse does not shape everyone the same way.

The tone is gritty, fast, and often brutal, but it is also surprisingly emotional. Nina and Mikey carry a lot of the heart of the series, and Riley keeps returning to love, loyalty, trauma, and the question of what surviving is supposed to mean if it costs you your humanity. There is action, gore, and plenty of close calls, but the books work because the characters are always carrying something personal through the chaos.

If you want a sprawling zombie saga with a sharp edge, start here, and read it in order.
