Series background & context

The Dawning of Muirwood travels back to the beginning, showing how the abbey that anchors so many stories first took shape. Instead of starting with an established spiritual center, we open on a world where Muirwood is only a rumor and the Medium’s presence is poorly understood.

Our guide into this era is Eilean, a foundling raised at Tintern Abbey and later sent as part of a small company to help establish a new abbey in the marshy wilds of Bearden Muir. Officially she is just a night servant to the king’s exiled advisor, a druid named Mordaunt. In practice she becomes his student, caretaker, and eventual rival as she learns just how dangerous his knowledge can be.

Mordaunt guards an ancient tome that speaks of other worlds and the magic that bridges them. Getting him to reveal its secrets becomes Eilean’s first mission, one that tests her loyalty to her Aldermaston and to the crown. Her forbidden studies unlock spoken magic and glimpses into parallel realms, setting her on a path far beyond the quiet life she expected.

Across The Druid, The Hunted, and The Betrayed, Eilean’s responsibilities expand from tending one difficult man to trying to avert catastrophe on two fronts. In her own world, political and religious powers clash over heresy and authority; in the mirror world of Leoneyis, a paranoid king and an ambitious queen steer their people toward disaster. Hoel Evnissyen, an inquisitor sent to capture her, slowly shifts from hunter to uneasy ally as they realize their fates are entangled.

The trilogy mixes frontier building, spy work, and portal fantasy. You see bridges being raised, walls going up, and the first rituals that will later feel timeless in other Muirwood books. At the same time, you’re watching Eilean decide what kind of person she wants to be when nearly everyone around her is lying for "the greater good."

For longtime fans, The Dawning of Muirwood is full of satisfying origin details: where certain Leerings came from, why specific titles and offices matter, how early choices ripple centuries forward. For new readers, it works as a starting point—an introduction to the Medium, the abbeys, and the idea that even the most sacred places were once fragile experiments held together by a few stubborn people.
