Series background & context
Angel Sworn is set in a secluded mountain valley called Clairvaux, a place that literally grows immortality. At its heart stands the Gallows Tree, whose fruit can restore youth to those bound by sacred covenants. The men and women who serve there—the angel sworn—pledge their lives to the Queen Mother and in return are granted long life, bonded animal powers, and a mandate to guard the wider world.
Life in Clairvaux is orderly, almost idyllic. Angel sworn tend gardens, study healing, patrol mountain passes, and occasionally descend into neighboring lands as judges or emissaries. Their magic is tied to grafting wands, or distaffs, that let them borrow the strengths of bonded animals: a hawk’s flight, a hare’s speed, a bear’s ferocity. The cost is pain shared on both sides and the constant risk of abusing that dominion.
The first book, Queen Mother, follows Cimree, a young healer in training whose quiet routine shatters when an unknown predator slaughters members of the order. The murders point to a new form of magic that twists animals into monsters. Faced with the possibility that Clairvaux itself could fall, Cimree is drawn into mysteries that reach back to the valley’s founding myths—and into contact with a captive "fallen" angel who may know more than anyone wants to admit.
When disaster finally comes and Clairvaux can no longer hold, the survivors are forced into exile. Tyrant Queen finds Cimree and her companions traveling to Ecbatana, a cosmopolitan fortress‑city of bazaars, multicolored walls, and sorcerers who practice metamorphistry, a very different kind of magic. There they encounter a political tradition as unnerving as it is useful: the city is periodically ruled by a tyrant queen chosen to shake up entrenched power.
The series balances adventure—mountain chases, sieges, monster attacks—with quieter explorations of faith, stewardship, and the ethics of living far longer than the people you’re meant to protect. Immortality in Angel Sworn is never just a perk. It’s a responsibility that can sour into arrogance or deepen into selfless service.
Readers who enjoy myth‑inflected fantasy, moral dilemmas, and the clash between cloistered orders and messy cities will find a lot to dig into here, with the promise of further revelations as the planned third volume continues Cimree’s journey.
