Series background & context
The Dark Is Rising sequence is Susan Cooper’s five book fantasy cycle about an ancient struggle between the Light and the Dark playing out in modern Britain. Ordinary holidays, train rides, and village fairs share space with grails, prophecy, and immortal guardians.
The journey starts in Over Sea, Under Stone, where siblings Simon, Jane, and Barney Drew discover a mysterious map while on vacation in a Cornish fishing village. Their treasure hunt for a hidden grail pulls them into the edges of that larger conflict, long before they fully understand it.
Then The Dark Is Rising abruptly widens the world.
In that second book, eleven year old Will Stanton wakes on his birthday to learn he is the last of the Old Ones, ageless defenders of the Light. Guided by Merriman Lyon, he must gather six Signs of Power during the twelve days of Christmas, while the Dark sends storm, ice, and its Black Rider to stop him.
The middle volumes weave Will’s story together with the Drews. Greenwitch reunites the children in Cornwall as they try to recover the stolen grail, and Jane’s act of compassion toward a strange sea figure quietly reshapes the battle. The Grey King moves to the mountains of Wales, where Will befriends Bran Davies, a mysterious albino boy linked to King Arthur, and wakes ancient sleepers to the call of a golden harp.
Everything comes together in Silver On The Tree, which sends Will, Bran, and the three Drew children into Welsh valleys, drowned kingdoms, and a place called the Lost Land in search of a crystal sword. Here Cooper leans hardest into Arthurian and Celtic myth, while also asking what it costs to stand on the winning side of a mythic war.
Across the sequence, the tone shifts from seaside mystery to winter ghost story to high fantasy, but the constants are vivid landscapes and the way magic overlays everyday life. The series is often recommended for confident middle grade readers who like slow building atmosphere, folklore, and the feeling that an ordinary bus ride might open onto something very old.
