Series background & context

If you like your historical romance with more movement than manners, this is one of Elizabeth Boyle's most adventurous series. The books follow the d’Artiers family across years marked by revolution, war, and divided loyalties, and they rarely stay still for long. These are romances full of masks, missions, escapes, and people trying to protect both their hearts and their names.

These books move.

The series begins with Brazen Angel, where Sophia d’Artiers is living a dangerous double life in London as the notorious masked thief known as the Brazen Angel. Right away you get the feel of the whole set. Boyle wants the glamour of ballrooms and elegant houses, but she also wants chase scenes, deceptions, and heroines who are far more capable than society expects.

That same energy carries into Brazen Heiress, which leans hard into hidden identity and espionage. Lily Copeland is pulled into the role of a missing heiress, and Webb Dryden ends up working beside her while trying not to lose sight of the mission. Then Brazen Temptress raises the emotional stakes with pirate danger, old betrayal, and the fierce second-chance story of Maureen Hawthorne and Julien d’Artiers.

What ties the series together is the family itself. The d’Artiers are scattered, burdened by the past, and often forced to play roles in public that hide what is really going on in private. England and France both matter here, and so does the long reach of political unrest. These are not quiet drawing-room romances where the worst outcome is a cutting remark from the ton. Characters are hunted, recruited, blackmailed, and pushed into impossible choices.

Love is never the only thing at stake.

The mood is lush and dramatic, but Boyle keeps it readable and brisk. Her heroes tend to be soldiers, spies, or men with more courage than peace of mind. Her heroines are bold, watchful, and often better at survival than anyone realizes. Even when a character looks polished on the surface, there is usually a scheme, a wound, or a secret just underneath.

What makes the series fun is the blend. You get sweeping romance, yes, but also the pleasure of seeing disguises fail, plots unravel, and proud people realize they are badly outmatched by love. If you want Boyle at her most high-stakes and theatrical, with family bonds running underneath every choice, The d’Artiers books are a very good place to start.
