Series background & context

The Confidence Game is Rachel Higginson in a darker, tighter mode. This is romantic suspense, not a light contemporary, and the tension comes as much from fear and history as it does from attraction. The central relationship is not a meet-cute. It is a second chance story built on crime, betrayal, survival, and the kind of shared past that never really stays in the past.

At the center are Caroline and Sayer Wesley. They were pulled into the Bratva world young and learned early how to lie, distract, charm, and survive. That criminal upbringing matters because it shapes everything about how they love each other and how they fail each other. By the time the series opens, Caroline has already run. She has built a hidden life, protected a dangerous secret, and spent years believing distance was the only safe option.

Then Sayer finds her.

That is the engine of the whole duet. Constant brings him crashing back into Caroline's carefully managed world, and Consequence raises the stakes even further by forcing them to work together under pressure. The books move between past and present, which lets the reader see both the teenage bond that formed between them and the hard adult fallout that comes later. That structure is a big part of the appeal. You are not just told these two once meant everything to each other. You watch the foundation being laid, and then you watch what it costs when it breaks.

The tone is intense, but the emotional core is surprisingly tender. Sayer and Caroline are dangerous in the ways their world taught them to be, yet the series keeps circling back to softer questions. Can two people who learned love inside violence ever trust it? Can you build a future when the skills that kept you alive are the same ones that keep wrecking intimacy?

This is also a compact series, which helps. Higginson does not sprawl here. The story stays close to its leads, their criminal history, and the secret that keeps pulling them into fresh danger. If you like your romance with mafia-adjacent stakes, damaged loyalty, and a lot of emotional heat, this is where Rachel Higginson pushes hardest into that space.

It is a love story, but it is also a trap-door story. Every time one truth comes up, something darker opens under it.
