Author bio
Rachel Higginson grew up in Nebraska, and that plainspoken Midwestern streak still shows up in the way she writes people. Before she published novels, she was the kid making up stories, writing plays, and imagining a future built around words.
For a long time, she thought journalism would be that future. In high school she pictured herself traveling the world and chasing big stories, but life shifted the plan. When her father began showing signs of the cancer that would later take his life, she chose to stay closer to home for college.
She still found her way out into the world.
During college she traveled widely, including time in Europe and work in Sri Lanka after the 2005 tsunami. Those years gave her a bigger view of people and place, but they also seem to have sharpened her sense of home. Nebraska remained the center of things, even after all that movement.
Adulthood arrived fast. She married her high school sweetheart while still in college, graduated, lost her father only a few months after he walked her down the aisle, and soon found herself expecting her first child. She has spoken openly about writing as a way back to herself during that season, part experiment, part healing process, and then very quickly something she could not imagine giving up.
That private need became a public career. After a long run of agent rejections, she self-published Reckless Magic and started building readers through the Star-Crossed books. From there she kept going, and kept stretching. She moved from YA fantasy into zombie survival romance with Love and Decay, then into emotional contemporary stories like The Five Stages of Falling in Love, Every Wrong Reason, and The Opposite of You.
What links those books is not genre so much as feeling. Higginson likes characters under pressure. She writes about people trying to make a life that is actually theirs, not one chosen for them by family, fear, class, grief, magic, or plain bad timing. Sometimes that means witches and immortal wars. Sometimes it means restaurant kitchens, broken marriages, or a woman starting over with a food truck.
She also tends to stay close to the emotional mess of things. Readers who pick up her books usually find big romantic stakes, strong interior voices, and people who have to work hard for trust. Even when the setting changes, from apocalypse to fantasy realm to contemporary small town, that part feels consistent.
Now she lives in Nebraska with her husband and children, writing across genres and keeping a long indie career going book by book. That range is part of her appeal. If you start with Reckless Magic, The Opposite of You, Love and Decay, or Crown of One Hundred Kings, you are still meeting the same storyteller, one who likes high stakes, bruised hearts, and characters who keep choosing love anyway.
