Then he is murdered on his first night and dragged straight into the ghost economy that keeps the city running. Caltro's problem is immediate and practical. He wants his freedom back. To get it, he has to survive a place where status is measured in souls, not just money, and where almost everyone around him is working an angle.

What makes the series more than a single clever premise is the way the story keeps widening. Caltro may be the emotional center, but he is not the only person pulling on the knot. The world has a strong Egyptian feel without turning into costume drama. Deserts, tombs, sacred rivers, masked ritual, hulking sanctuaries, and uneasy ideas about the afterlife all feed into the atmosphere. The rules of soulbinding are what make it sing. Ghosts are labor, wealth, punishment, inheritance, and political leverage all at once. That means every murder has consequences beyond death, and every act of power feels slightly obscene.

The tone is dark, but not flat. Galley lets the series be vicious, yet he also gives it bite and dry humor. Caltro in particular keeps the books moving because he is not a saint, not a grand hero, and not interested in pretending otherwise. He lies, bargains, adapts, and mouths off when it is clearly a bad idea. That streak of wit stops the trilogy from becoming miserable, even when the city itself is at its worst.

If you like secondary-world fantasy that feels strange right from page one, this series delivers. The Chasing Graves books are about freedom, ownership, power, and the ugly things people will justify when a whole system rewards them for it. They are also, very simply, a great time if you want ghosts, knives, political backstabbing, and a city that seems determined to eat everyone in it.
