Author bio

David Estes was born in El Paso, Texas, on April 13, 1981, but he mostly grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He later attended Penn State, and those different places, Texas, Pennsylvania, and eventually much farther from home, fit the restless energy of his books. His stories rarely stay small for long.

He was a reader first. Then he became a writer in a very hands-on way, teaching himself as he went and publishing early work in the young adult and children's space. He began writing novels in 2010, and by June 2012 he had made the jump to writing full time.

That early stretch was busy.

Books came quickly, and so did the sense that he liked building worlds with room to grow. Readers who found him through Angel Evolution or The Moon Dwellers could already see the pattern. He liked high stakes, strong emotional pulls, and characters who had to keep moving even when their world had turned upside down.

Life opened up for him, too. After college he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he met his wife, Adele. They later settled in Hawaii, where he has lived with Adele, their sons Beau and Brody, and the family's cats while continuing to write across fantasy and science fiction. He has also shared the lighter bits of his life over the years, like a love of ping-pong and a preference for writing poolside when possible.

A lot of readers still start with the YA dystopian books. The Moon Dwellers helped introduce his name to a bigger audience, thanks to its underground society, class divide, and scrappy heroine Adele. Around the same period he wrote the Country Saga and the Slip trilogy, stories built on big what-if ideas like collapsing environments, brutal systems, and the cost of survival, but always grounded in families, friendships, and kids trying to stay human in ugly situations.

He can go dark, but he usually keeps the emotional thread easy to follow.

That balance shows up again in books like Salem's Revenge, which mixes witches with apocalypse, and Strings, his darker reworking of the Pinocchio idea. Even when the premise is strange or the setting is far from ordinary, Estes tends to focus on people under pressure, siblings, reluctant heroes, uneasy allies, and characters who keep choosing responsibility even when it hurts.

In recent years he has become especially well known for large epic fantasy. Fatemarked opened the door to a sprawling world of prophecy, war, dragons, and people born with dangerous powers. He followed it with The Kingfall Histories and then The Forsworn Oath, building a much larger connected fantasy setting book by book. Those novels are longer and broader than his early YA work, but the appeal is similar: big stakes, lots of momentum, and characters who have to earn every victory.

He also likes changing gears. There is the younger, comic-book energy of Nikki Powergloves, the science-fantasy feel of Star-Born Mage, and co-written projects like The Last King, The Bloodwood Saga, and Kraken Rider Z. That range is part of the fun with David Estes. If you like speculative fiction in almost any flavor, there is a good chance he has written something nearby.
