As Time Goes By

by Lori Wick

1992

Years after a painful falling out, storekeeper Jeff Taylor and free spirited Bobbie Bradford find themselves living in the same California town again. Both have grown in faith, but old wounds linger, and they must decide whether to risk a second chance at love.

Series background & context

The Californians follows the Donovan family and their friends as they leave missionary life in Hawaii and resettle in 1870s California. The four novels move between San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and smaller towns, tracing how siblings Kaitlin, Sean, and Marcail grow into their own callings far from the islands where they were raised.

In Whatever Tomorrow Brings, eldest daughter Kaitlin suddenly becomes responsible for her younger brother and sister when illness and upheaval upend family plans. A trip meant to be a short visit turns into a permanent move, and Kaitlin must secure work, a safe home, and a future for all three of them. Merchant Marshall "Rigg" Taylor and his extended family in Santa Rosa become key pieces of that new life.

As Time Goes By revisits the Taylor family years later. Jeff Taylor has matured in his faith and regrets the way he once treated lively Bobbie Bradford. When Bobbie returns to town, both of them must decide whether old hurts will define them or whether God is offering a fresh start.

Sean Donovan focuses on the Donovans' son, whose bitterness and poor choices lead him into crime. Caught in his first bank robbery and sentenced to hang, he is unexpectedly spared when livery owner Charlotte Cooper marries him to save his life and secure a blacksmith for the town. Their uneasy marriage of convenience slowly becomes something more as Sean's faith is rebuilt.

In Donovan's Daughter, youngest sister Marcail is now a schoolteacher in a strict little town. A snowstorm strands her overnight at the local doctor's house, and innocent circumstances spiral into scandal. Facing public condemnation and pressure to resign, she has to choose between her own dreams and the needs of the children she serves, all while sorting through her growing feelings for the town doctor.

Throughout the series, questions of calling, reputation, and grace come up again and again. The Donovans and their friends wrestle with what it means to trust God in a changing world, handle gossip, and build families that are both loving and honest. The Californians will appeal to readers who like Western settings mixed with strong family threads and clear spiritual arcs.
