Her past is never far away, and neither are the people she is trying, with mixed success, to protect.

There is romance too, but like a lot of Edwards's best series, it lives inside a busier life. Frankie's history with Harrow matters. So does Kierce. So do her responsibilities, her dead, and the siblings she would burn down the world for. That balance keeps the books moving. The emotional stakes are personal, but the plot never stands still long enough to wallow.
