Series background & context

The Body Shop has one of Hailey Edwards's best premises. On the surface, it is a garage. Underneath, it is a place where the dead can come for help with unfinished business. Mary Frances Talbot, Frankie, runs both sides of that life while trying not to get noticed by the wrong people, which would be easier if corpses, ghosts, exes, and family trouble would stop piling up at her door.

They do not stop.

Frankie gives the series its tone. She is practical, funny, and carrying more history than she lets on. She and her chosen family, including Matty and Josie, make the books feel grounded even when the cases get strange. The body shop itself is a great center of gravity. It lets the series be part paranormal mystery, part ghost errand service, part family drama, and part supernatural noir.

The cases tend to begin in a very Hailey Edwards way, with one strange request that turns out to be connected to something much bigger. A ghost needs help. Someone disappears. A supernatural body count rises. Then old wounds, buried secrets, and the cost of Frankie's gifts start pushing into the foreground. Her past is never far away, and neither are the people she is trying, with mixed success, to protect.

There is romance too, but like a lot of Edwards's best series, it lives inside a busier life. Frankie's history with Harrow matters. So does Kierce. So do her responsibilities, her dead, and the siblings she would burn down the world for. That balance keeps the books moving. The emotional stakes are personal, but the plot never stands still long enough to wallow.

If you want a newer Hailey Edwards series with ghosts, found family, and a heroine whose work life is complicated in every possible realm, start with Fair Market Value. The books are fast, funny, and built on the kind of weird little details that make a supernatural world feel lived in.
