The Shadow of the Gods

by John Gwynne

Series background & context

The Bloodsworn Saga leaves the Banished Lands behind for Vigrid, a harsh, cold world inspired by Norse myth. Here the gods tore each other apart centuries ago, and only their bones remain, buried in mountains, fjords and forests that are anything but peaceful.

Power in Vigrid belongs to jarls, warbands and those born Tainted—people who carry a dead god’s blood and can call on its strength. The Tainted are feared, enslaved and collared, their gifts turned into weapons for others, even as rumours grow that the gods may not be as dead as everyone believes.

The story follows three very different warriors. Orka is a battle-hardened huntress trying to live quietly with her family until violence rips that life apart and her son is taken. Varg is an escaped thrall who joins the mercenary warband known as the Bloodsworn to find out who murdered his sister. Elvar is a jarl’s daughter who has traded comfort for battle-fame with the mercenary crew called the Battle-Grim.

In The Shadow of the Gods their paths begin separately as they chase missing children, lost memories and glory. By The Hunger of the Gods, a dragon god named Lik-Rifa has been freed from captivity, warbands are crossing seas and mountains, and desperate oaths push friends and enemies into uneasy alliances. The Fury of the Gods brings those threads together in a final clash of mortals and divinities for the soul of Vigrid.

Gwynne leans into everything sharp and weathered about this setting: longships on icy seas, shield walls grinding together, trolls and draugs in the mist, and mead halls full of boasts that might get you killed. The stories are bloody and often brutal, but they are anchored by found families, quiet acts of kindness and characters who refuse to give up on the people they love.

The Bloodsworn Saga is completely separate from the Banished Lands books, so you can jump in here without having read the earlier series. With its tight focus on three leads, cinematic battles and deep roots in Norse legend, it’s a great choice if you want Viking-flavoured epic fantasy with heart.
