Wartime at Bletchley Park

by Molly Green

2022

In 1939, heartbroken Londoner Dulcie Treadwell is sent to Bletchley Park to help crack German codes. As she finds purpose in the secret war, a spiteful betrayal threatens her job, her reputation and the fragile hope of seeing her lost love again.

Series background & context

The Bletchley Park Girls series follows different young women who are pulled into Britain’s secret codebreaking centre during the Second World War. Each book stands alone, but together they sketch a world of long night shifts, strict secrecy and sudden, risky love affairs in the shadow of war.

In Wartime at Bletchley Park, Dulcie Treadwell arrives still reeling from heartbreak over an American broadcaster who left for Berlin without saying goodbye. Posted from blackout London to the Buckinghamshire estate, she swaps office work for the claustrophobic huts where teams struggle to unravel German Enigma messages. Dulcie has to prove she belongs, ignore the condescension of some colleagues and cling to the idea that the codes she breaks might save lives.

But just as she begins to thrive, a poisonous act of jealousy threatens her job and her reputation, forcing her to fight back in a place where no one is supposed to talk about anything.

The second book, Winter at Bletchley Park, shifts the spotlight to Rosie Frost, a woman who was jilted on her wedding day and is now raising an illegitimate child in a judgy wartime Britain. After losing her dream job when her secret is exposed, she is recruited for her language skills and sent to Bletchley to help decode Italian naval signals. The work gives her a sense of worth again, but the appearance of a familiar face at the Park pulls old wounds open and makes every encoded message feel personal.

Wartime Wishes at Bletchley Park begins on the continent, with young teacher Madeleine Hamilton escorting two pupils on a dangerous train journey as Europe slides toward war. A chance rescue introduces her to a man she will not forget. A year later she is training in Morse code at Bletchley when that man reappears, and Maddie has to decide whether she can trust her instincts when both her heart and national security may be at stake.

Across the series, Bletchley Park itself is almost a character, from the chilly huts and overflowing bike sheds to the strains of living in crowded billets far from home. Friendships build in snatched tea breaks, rivalries flare in stuffy rooms, and the constant pressure of secrecy means the heroines cannot fully explain their lives to the people they love.

Readers who enjoy character driven historical fiction will find a mix of romance, mystery and everyday detail here, as these women learn new skills, push against expectations and discover that the quiet work of listening, counting and decoding can change the course of the war.
