Series background & context
The Ascendant Wars is a military science-fiction trilogy by Rhett C. Bruno and M. B. Vance. Humanity has already lost a defining war before the first book opens. The Ascendants have banished human survivors to a distant star system, where mysterious machine rulers called the Wardens ration resources and set the terms of life.
That does not mean people have stopped fighting.
The remaining colonies face shortages, criminal networks, and political rivalries while living under the Wardens' power. The machines are not simply distant administrators. Their decisions can reshape the rules of war, and humans have little certainty about what the Wardens want from them.
Hellfire begins with Commander Rylan Holt investigating inter-colony arms trafficking. An informant tells him that cartel leader Lilith has gathered forbidden weapons of mass destruction and claims that the Wardens have approved her plan to use them. Aboard the battleship Audacity, operations officer Scott Carrick and nurse Aila Okuma are drawn into a crisis that exposes just how dangerous the system has become.
The series follows Rylan, Scott, Aila, and other characters through a conflict where orders, loyalties, and even the meaning of victory can change without warning. Rylan brings intelligence experience and a need to understand the bigger picture. Scott faces the immediate risks of military action. Aila begins as a junior medical officer who has never seen battle, then has to adapt quickly when survival becomes the only plan.
In Brimstone, the war turns into a cruel contest controlled by the Ascendants, while the human resistance tries to learn what Lilith knows. Ashes brings the conflict toward a final challenge, with the surviving characters confronting the Ascendant leader Cef and the possibility of ending a cycle of mass violence.
The books are direct, fast-paced military science fiction. Expect starships, battlefield pressure, intelligence work, enemy schemes, and a running concern with who controls advanced technology. The Wardens and Ascendants give the series an artificial-intelligence angle, but the emotional core stays with human characters trying to protect one another in a war designed to make them fail.
Start with Hellfire and read straight through to Brimstone and Ashes. The trilogy tells one connected story, and each book raises the cost of the choices made in the one before it.
