Series background & context

The Affair is Beth Kery in pure serial mode. It follows one central couple across weekly style installments and then a complete novel, which means the relationship is allowed to build in stages, with each step getting a little riskier. If you like erotic romance that leans hard into anticipation, boundary testing, and emotional escalation, this series knows exactly what it is doing.

The couple at the center are Emma Shore and Michael Montand. Emma is an unconventional hospice nurse who takes a job at Michael's grand lakeside estate. Michael is a race car billionaire, polished on the outside, dangerous around the edges, and carrying appetites that would send plenty of people running in the other direction. Emma does not run, but she is not passive either. One of the most interesting things about the series is that she insists on rules of her own.

That tension gives the story its shape.

The books play with power, but they also keep coming back to consent, emotional self protection, and the difference between an arrangement and a real attachment. Emma and Michael try to make the affair manageable by naming limits. Of course, this is a Beth Kery series, so the named limits are exactly what start breaking down once the relationship becomes more intimate.

The setting adds to the mood. The mansion, the travel, the luxury, and the sense of exclusion all make the romance feel closed off from ordinary life. That is part of the fantasy, but it is also part of the danger. Emma is stepping into a carefully controlled world that was not built for easy honesty.

Because the story was first released in parts, the reading experience has a strong propulsive rhythm. Each segment pushes the emotional stakes higher. If you prefer to read the full arc in one sitting, the complete edition is the easiest route. If you like the stop and start tension of a serial, the weekly installments are fun in their own right.
