Series background & context
The 13th Reality series begins with Atticus “Tick” Higginbottom, a smart but awkward thirteen-year-old living in small-town Washington who would rather stay home with a puzzle than impress anyone at school. His life tilts sideways the day a cryptic letter arrives from Alaska, warning him that reality itself is in danger and asking if he’s willing to help.
Those letters pull Tick into the world of the Realitants, a secret group that monitors countless alternate realities—new worlds that split off every time someone makes a different choice. Guided by the eccentric Master George and joined by fellow recruits Paul and Sofia, Tick discovers that his knack for solving riddles is tied to a strange energy called Chi’karda that lets him cross between Realities.
In The Journal of Curious Letters, the mystery is personal and playful: Tick must decode twelve increasingly dangerous clues just to reach the starting line of his new life. By The Hunt for Dark Infinity, the series has grown much darker. A brilliant but unhinged scientist, Reginald Chu, has built a weapon that drives people insane across multiple worlds, and both Tick and his enemy Mistress Jane are racing to control or destroy it.
The Blade of Shattered Hope and The Void of Mist and Thunder push the idea of splintered worlds to its breaking point. Mistress Jane taps into the raw power of the 13th Reality itself to try to reshape existence according to her own idea of perfection, even if that means billions of lives become collateral damage. Tick and his friends are forced into uneasy alliances, hard sacrifices, and battles that play out across bizarre, imaginative landscapes.
Even with the big, multiverse backdrop, the books keep circling back to questions a younger reader can grab onto: how it feels to be different, what it means to be brave when you’re scared, and how much responsibility one kid should carry for fixing mistakes made by powerful adults. Tick’s close relationship with his family—and the way his parents try to support him even when they don’t understand everything—gives the story a warm center.
Expect a blend of science-fiction ideas, brain-teaser puzzles, and offbeat humor, with set pieces that range from creepy factories to impossible cities built on the rules of time itself. Taken together, the four books tell one long arc about power, choice, and the cost of rewriting the universe, all while following a group of friends who never quite lose their sense of wonder.
