Texas Paladin

by RO Lane

2017

Texas Ranger Jubal Coe rides home to find his cabin burned and his family murdered. Sworn to hunt down the men responsible, he follows a bloody trail across the frontier, torn between cold revenge and the code that once made him a lawman.

Series background & context

The Texas Paladin series centers on Jubal Coe, a Texas Ranger whose life is split cleanly into “before” and “after.” Before, he’s a respected lawman with a wife and two children waiting in a small ranch house. After, he rides home one night to find the place burned and his family murdered.

That opening tragedy in Texas Paladin gives the whole series its weight. Jubal knows exactly who helped plan the attack and which men struck the final blows. The courts won’t reach all of them, and even when they do, the sentences may not match what he feels in his bones is deserved. Lane lets readers sit with a man who is sworn to the law yet driven by grief that keeps pushing him toward simple revenge.

Jubal’s skills as a Ranger are never in doubt. He tracks sign where others see only dust, reads men quickly, and shoots straight. What’s less certain is whether he can keep his soul intact while using those talents. He spends the first book hunting down the scattered killers one by one, riding through border settlements, ranch country, and outlaw hideouts, constantly measuring his actions against the oath he took when he pinned on the star.

In Texas Paladin Rides Again, Jubal tries to settle into a quieter life but finds he’s not done with the Rangers or they with him. The state calls him back to chase three vicious escapees from Huntsville Prison, men who think nothing of gunning a Ranger down in cold blood. Each new assignment drags him farther along the Rio Grande and into towns where the line between lawman and hired gun blurs, and where every victory comes with another scar.

Texas Paladin, Death Wish raises the stakes even further. When two young Texas Rangers are murdered by a hardened border criminal, Jubal takes the case personally. He’s joined by the grieving father of one of the dead men, and their ride toward the border country is as much about wrestling with sorrow as it is about catching a killer. The closer they get to their quarry, the more Jubal has to decide whether he’s hunting for justice, vengeance, or a mix of both.

Across the trilogy, Lane leans into the meaning of the word “paladin”: a champion who stands for something larger than himself. Jubal Coe is not perfect—he’s angry, sometimes reckless, and far from saintly—but he is deeply committed to protecting the weak and honoring his fallen comrades. The books offer plenty of classic western pleasures—posse chases, shootouts, prison breaks, and dusty border towns—yet they also linger on campfire conversations, worn‑out Rangers, and the quiet courage it takes simply to get up the next day and ride again.

Readers who like their westerns with both hard action and a thoughtful look at the cost of violence will find Texas Paladin’s world a place worth visiting more than once.
