Nash Cline

by RO Lane

2019

Nash Cline lies about his age to join the army, survives brutal fighting, and comes home with a stubborn sense of justice. In Denver he teams with war buddy Felix Wasson, building a detective business that takes them into dangerous, lawless country.

Series background & context

The Nash Cline books follow a young man who grows up fast under fire and then has to live with what that growing up costs him. He starts as a boy who lies about his age to enlist and ends up as a man other people hire when there’s no one else to turn to.

In Nash Cline he joins the army too young, sees hard fighting, and forges a tight bond with fellow soldier Felix Wasson. The war strips away any illusions he has about glory, but it leaves him with two things that matter: practical skills and a stubborn sense of right and wrong. When the guns finally fall silent, Nash and Felix drift west, carrying scars that don’t show on the outside.

Denver in its early days gives them a fresh start. Instead of signing on as cowhands, they hang out a shingle as investigators, taking the kind of work that sits between what the sheriff can do and what honest folks can safely ignore. Robberies, disappearances, and quiet little feuds that could explode into bloodshed all end up on their desk. The cases pull them through mining camps, new rail towns, and lonely ranch country, where a badge doesn’t always mean much and justice can be a matter of who draws first.

Into that life rides Ada Simmons, a young woman Nash rescues from a stagecoach attack. She’s no passive survivor; Ada has a sharp mind for money and people, and she slowly becomes both Nash’s partner and his anchor. By the time of Nash Cline, Book 2, he is running the Nash Cline Detective Agency in Denver, taking on jobs nobody else will touch while trying to keep his promise to marry Ada and give her some measure of peace.

The second book sends Nash and Felix after a five‑year‑old boy taken by Arapaho raiders on the eve of the wedding. From there the work only gets riskier: tracking stolen horse herds, crossing several territories in pursuit of a murderous vigilante, and standing up to men who use the word “justice” to excuse their own cruelty. Every ride out carries the chance that one of them won’t come back, and Lane doesn’t pretend the cost of that risk is small.

What ties the series together is less any single villain than the way Nash chooses to live. He has a strong moral code but no taste for preaching, and he’s willing to bend rules when the law fails decent people. The stories blend shootouts, detective legwork, and long days in the saddle with quieter scenes of friendship, marriage, and the small domestic routines that make all the danger worth facing.

Overall, the Nash Cline books read like early detective novels laid over a classic western backdrop: big skies, rough towns, fast horses, and a hero who’d rather do the job right than do it safe.
