Terry Lynn Johnson Books in Order

Terry Lynn Johnson grew up on a lake in northern Ontario, and that setting runs straight through her books. She has said she was always around the water, swimming, boating, exploring, and sometimes falling in right after the ice went out. Her parents were more drawn to routine than adventure, but the landscape around her kept pulling her outside.

She also knew early that she wanted to write. In interviews, Johnson has said she wanted to be an author from about grade four, when she was devouring books like Black Beauty, Misty of Chincoteague, and Island of the Blue Dolphins. Those stories, full of animals, danger, and young people figuring things out, clearly stayed with her.

Then real outdoor work gave her a whole new set of stories.

Johnson spent twelve years as a backcountry ranger in Quetico Provincial Park, taking long canoe trips into the wilderness and keeping journals about what she saw, learned, and survived. Later she worked as a Conservation Officer in northern Ontario. She also built a big part of her life around sled dogs, first helping other mushers and eventually running her own kennel of eighteen Alaskan huskies.

That experience gave her fiction its footing.

When Johnson writes about cold, exhaustion, wet gear, trail decisions, animal behavior, or the strange calm that can arrive in a crisis, she is not making it up from a distance. At first she thought all of that material might become a memoir. Then a writing course changed the plan. Her tutor suggested she try writing for young readers instead, after seeing the voice she brought to magazine pieces and short work, and Johnson realized the fit was right.

She found her lane in fast, grounded adventure novels. Dogsled Dreams, her debut, follows a young musher learning to trust herself and her dogs. Ice Dogs raises the stakes with a teen dogsledder stranded in the Alaskan bush, while Sled Dog School brings humor and heart to a story about bullying, math, and a kid who would much rather be with a dog team than in a classroom. In Dog Driven, she adds a more personal struggle, sending a young racer onto a brutal trail while her vision is getting worse. That book went on to win the IODE Canada Violet Downey Book Award.

She writes survival at different speeds, too. The Survivor Diaries books, including Overboard!, Avalanche!, Lost!, and Dust Storm!, are lean, high-stakes adventures for younger readers. They are short, tense, and built around the kind of practical problem-solving that has always interested her.

Another side of her work shows up in Falcon Wild and Rescue at Lake Wild. One centers on falconry, trust, and a desperate trip through the Montana backcountry. The other follows a girl trying to save orphaned beaver kits while getting pulled into a local environmental mystery. Even when the subjects change, Johnson tends to return to the same things: young people under pressure, close attention to animals, and nature as something beautiful but never soft.

She still writes from northern Ontario, drawing on years spent paddling, camping, boating, and working outdoors. That firsthand knowledge is a big reason readers connect with her books. They move quickly, but they never feel fake. You get the sense that she knows exactly how cold the air is, how tired the dogs are, and how much nerve it takes to keep going.
