Glue

Spanning four decades, this novel follows four friends—Terry, Carl, Billy, and Gally—growing up in the Edinburgh schemes. It is a sprawling story of loyalty, violence, and the different paths men take to survive their environment.

Series background & context

If you spend enough time wandering through the chaotic literary streets of Irvine Welsh’s Edinburgh, you are bound to eventually end up in the back of Terry "Juice" Lawson’s taxi. He is a figure who seems to take up more space than the average person, both physically and conversationally. While he first came to prominence as one of the four central protagonists in Glue, Terry quickly proved that he was too loud, too brash, and far too entertaining to remain on the sidelines.

Terry is the ultimate chancer. He is a man of simple pleasures, most of which involve golf, avoiding honest hard work, and an endless pursuit of casual romantic encounters. Over the years, he has held various jobs, ranging from a soft drink salesman—the origin of his sticky nickname—to a cab driver patrolling the city. However, his true vocation is simply being Terry. He possesses a total lack of shame and a blunt, homemade philosophy on life that he is more than happy to share with anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot.

What makes his specific run of stories so compelling is how he weaves through the wider tapestry of Welsh’s universe. He does not exist in a vacuum. He crosses paths with the infamous cast of Trainspotting, notably joining forces with Sick Boy to produce a disastrously low-budget adult film. He serves as a vital bridge between the different crews in this fictional version of Scotland, proving that the local underworld is actually a very small, interconnected village.

He eventually takes the lead role in A Decent Ride, a novel that pits him against the elements. Set against the backdrop of "Hurricane Bawbag" battering the Scottish coast, the story finds Terry trying to chauffeur a reality TV star around while navigating a high-stakes missing person case and his own embarrassing medical woes.

Terry Lawson is a walking disaster, but he is also a survivor.

Beneath the crude humor and the relentless libido, there is a surprising amount of depth to these adventures. Welsh uses Terry to explore the uncomfortable reality of aging. It is one thing to be a reckless hedonist in your twenties, but it is a very different challenge to maintain that lifestyle when middle age arrives and the body begins to rebel. Watching Terry rage against the dying of the light—usually while trying to scam someone—is both hilarious and strangely poignant.

These books offer a look at a rapidly gentrifying city through the eyes of a man who stubbornly refuses to evolve. Terry might not be a role model, and you certainly would not want to lend him money, but he remains one of the most vibrant voices in contemporary fiction. He represents a resilient, unruly spirit that simply will not be quieted.
