That simple goal sends him through another maze of gangsters, scams, family schemes, and personal guilt. The series keeps raising the stakes without losing the intimate focus on Terry's conscience and the people he cannot stop caring about.

What makes these books work is their balance. They are full of crime, violence, and sharp dialogue, but they are never cold. Piccirilli is just as interested in shame, loyalty, and missed chances as he is in heists or beatings. Terry is not a superhero detective.
