Series background & context

The Terran Scout Fleet series shifts the camera down from capital ships to a small team working in the shadows. Set in the same universe as Omega Force and the Black Fleet books, it follows Jacob Brown, a young marine who signs up to defend Earth after alien attacks scar his homeworld.

In Marine Jacob expects to serve aboard a big warship, but Naval Special Operations has other plans. He is recruited into Scout Team Obsidian, a small unit sent to dangerous, often lawless worlds where official fleets cannot easily operate. Their missions are part reconnaissance, part problem solving, and part survival training under live fire.

As the series continues into Boneshaker and Vapor Trails, Obsidian is pushed further from the safety of home. They chase a rogue Terran cruiser into hostile space, then find themselves burned by their own chain of command and hunted for stealing a ship. The irony is that the ship they are flying belongs to Jason Burke of Omega Force, who also has strong opinions about getting it back.

Later books such as Heavy Metal and Aftershock throw the team into the middle of civil wars, stolen superweapons, and the ugly business of sentient trafficking along the frontier. Jacob takes heavy personal losses, including serious injuries, and has to learn how to lead while dealing with trauma and prosthetics that never quite feel natural.

Blackheart and Ghosts deepen the conspiracy side of the series. Jacob is ordered to track down the Viper, a legendary cyborg assassin with a long history, and then discovers that some political and military leaders may not be who they claim to be at all. By that point Scout Fleet is playing a dangerous game against enemies who can rewrite identities as easily as records.

The tone mixes military adventure with spy thriller elements. There are drop ship insertions, stealthy infiltrations, and running fights through alien cities, but also long conversations about duty, loyalty, and when to walk away from bad orders. Because of its ties to Omega Force, the series adds a ground level view to events that shape the wider quadrant.

You can enjoy Terran Scout Fleet on its own, starting with Marine, or read it in parallel with the later Omega Force books to see how stories about one family of characters ripple out into another.
