by Joshua Dalzelle

2013

Series background & context

Omega Force begins with one man in a mountain cabin and explodes into a wide open space opera. Jason Burke, an ex special operations soldier trying to disappear in the Rockies, is hauled into the wider galaxy when he investigates what he thinks is an air crash and finds a damaged alien ship instead.

That accident strands him far from Earth, surrounded by species he has never seen and rules he does not understand. His best chance at survival is to ally with a handful of outcasts and criminals, steal a heavily armed gunship called the Phoenix, and turn themselves into a mercenary crew that can choose its own jobs.

The books follow this crew as they take contracts along the rough edges of a vast interstellar confederation. On paper they are hired guns, but they live by a simple code: help people who cannot help themselves and walk away from work that crosses their moral line. Jobs that start as small escorts or rescue missions often reveal bigger problems in the background.

Over time Omega Force moves from skirmishes with crime syndicates and local warlords into conflicts that shake the entire quadrant. Jason and his friends tangle with corrupt officials, ancient empires, and eventually a ruthless artificial intelligence known as the Machine. The stakes grow, but the series keeps circling back to tight, personal decisions about loyalty and trust.

A big part of the appeal lies in the crew itself. The human outsider, a grumpy engineer, a reserved assassin, a towering bruiser, a cynical doctor, and a sentient machine all bring different skills and baggage to the table. Their banter, rivalries, and small acts of kindness make the Phoenix feel less like a warship and more like a home with guns bolted to the hull.

Tone wise, these are fast moving adventures full of dogfights, boarding actions, and narrow escapes, but they are not grim. The books lean on snappy dialogue, found family warmth, and the comfort of watching capable people solve impossible problems. Each novel tells a contained story while feeding into longer arcs about galactic politics and the future of the Confederation.

Later installments link directly with Dalzelle’s other series, especially Terran Scout Fleet, so readers who want the larger picture can follow the crossover threads. You do not need a map to enjoy Omega Force, though. Starting with Omega Rising and working forward gives you the full ride from accidental hijacking to quadrant changing crises.
