Terran Eclipse shifts the Hunter universe back toward Terra and hands the lead to Karen Drayson, a military officer trying to defend home in a system that keeps putting barriers in front of her. The titles are not subtle, and they do not need to be. This is a military science fiction series about command, invasion, and the hard ceilings placed above women in a hostile institution.

She is competent, ambitious, and already paying the price for being both. Glass Ceiling begins with her as a rising Terran Fighter Corps officer who has been pushed into an old command and then dragged back home into something worse than simple politics. From there the sequence grows through Hard Ceiling, Soft Ceiling, and the later eclipse books, always keeping one eye on external threats and the other on the people above Karen who are supposed to support her but often make everything harder.

That double pressure gives the series its texture. Karen is not only fighting enemies coming from outside. She is dealing with misogyny, mixed orders, career sabotage, and the exhausting reality of being held to standards that were never meant to let her win. At the same time, Terra still needs defending. Fleets still need commanding. If she fails, the cost is not personal embarrassment. It is catastrophe.

The later books widen from direct military response into larger questions of alliance, stability, and whether anything on Karen's side can truly hold together under strain. That makes the series feel like both a frontline war story and a leadership drama. Ellis keeps the action moving, but the emotional center stays with what it takes for Karen to keep standing there at the gate.

It is one of the clearest later-series entry points if you want a focused protagonist, home-system stakes, and a more openly critical look at military hierarchy.
