Telemass Quartet Books in Order

The Telemass Quartet takes place in one of Eric Brown's longest-running science-fiction settings. In this future, vast Telemass Stations transmit people and goods between star systems, making a far-flung human Expansion possible. The technology has made travel easier, but it has not made families, grief, or betrayal any simpler.

The series follows Matt Hendrick, a Dutch former police officer. His ex-wife, Maatje, has taken their daughter Samantha across the colonies with the troubling Dr Hovarth. Matt's mission is direct enough: find Samantha and bring her safely home. The journey is anything but straightforward.

Each novella sends him to a different world.

In Famadihana on Fomalhaut IV, Matt reaches a backwater planet where local beliefs promise contact with the dead. Sacrifice on Spica III moves him to an ice-bound colony shaped by a dangerous cult. Reunion on Alpha Reticuli II takes him to Tourmaline, a glamorous resort world where a telepath offers help, though nothing about the offer is simple.

The final main installment, Exalted on Bellatrix I, brings Matt to Beltran, home of the secretive Vhey. By this point the pursuit has become more than a chase. Matt has to face what has happened to his family, what he is willing to forgive, and how far hope can be trusted when alien technology appears able to undo death itself.

Along the way, Matt is joined by Mercury Velasquez, a telepath who becomes an important ally and emotional counterweight. Their relationship helps keep the books grounded while the setting grows increasingly strange. Brown uses unusual colony worlds, alien customs, and far-future travel for adventure, but the core remains a parent's fear of losing a child.

The mood is a mix of planetary romance, detective work, and family drama. Each novella tells a complete episode with its own setting and threat, while the search for Samantha carries through all four. Telemass Coda returns to Matt and Samantha after the main quest, giving the story a final meditation on loss, memory, and the risks of making one more journey.
