Series background & context
The Ted Darling books are police procedurals set mainly in Stockport and the wider Greater Manchester area. At the center is Ted, first seen in story terms in The First Time Ever, where he moves from Specialist Firearms work into CID. He is small, quiet, steady under pressure, and absolutely not built from the usual hard-drinking detective template. That difference matters to the books from the start.
Ted is the kind of detective who would rather be right than loud.
Across the series, each book brings its own case, but the feel stays consistent. Baby's Got Blue Eyes opens with bodies being dumped on Ted's patch. Preacher Man turns to missing teenagers and a predator with a grim timetable. Where the Girls Are and Dirty Old Town widen the focus to vulnerable girls, domestic abuse, and the kinds of harm that often get ignored until it is too late. These are crime novels, but they are also books about systems, pressure, and the damage people do when they think no one important is looking.
The setting gives the series much of its shape. Stockport is not just a backdrop. Car parks, care homes, bars, side streets, police offices, and nearby rural ground all keep turning up as places where ordinary life can go badly wrong. Even when Ted steps away from home turf, as parts of The End of the Line do, the books keep that northern, local feel. The dialogue and rhythms are grounded rather than polished, which makes the investigations feel lived in.
Ted's personal life matters too. His long relationship with Trevor, later a marriage, gives the series warmth and a stable emotional center, even when the jobs around them are anything but stable. Around Ted is a team that changes, grows, clashes, and sometimes gets stretched past breaking point. Promotions, shrinking resources, force politics, and the occasional long-running villain all leave marks, which is why the books work best in sequence even though the central mystery in each one is usually self-contained.
These books remember what happened last time.
Tone-wise, expect serious, character-led police fiction rather than puzzle-box cozy mystery. Krier is interested in how cases are built, how evidence can fail, and what it costs good officers to keep going when easy answers would be more convenient. Books such as Down Down Down, The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird, It's Oh So Quiet, and A Woman's Heart show that range well, moving from psychological games to social issues without losing sight of Ted and his team. If you want the fullest experience, start with The First Time Ever and keep going in order. Ted's cases close, but his world keeps moving.
