Tear Down Heaven begins with a wonderfully aggressive premise. Long ago, Gilgamesh refused death, killed the gods, and conquered the afterlife. That means Heaven is no longer a place of peace or justice. It is a regime, and a brutal one. By the time the series opens, the people hurt most by that order, demons, witches, and everyone pushed outside Heaven's rules, are left trying to survive under a system built to erase them.

The central pair are Bex and Adrian Blackwood. Bex is a demon, a mercenary, and not the sort of person most sane clients would hire unless they were completely out of other options. Adrian is a witch with a family problem that has grown into a Heaven-sized crisis. When he hires Bex and her crew to protect him while he works his magic, the job looks like a contract gig. Aaron clearly enjoys writing the demon crew, the talking cat, the magical tools, and the general feeling that everyone involved is both competent and a little bit one bad choice away from setting the room on fire. The world has real mythic weight, but the books never get too solemn to enjoy themselves.
