Series background & context
The Tathea books are Anne Perry's turn away from crime fiction and toward large-scale fantasy. They begin with Tathea, the story of a woman who loses the safety, status, and family life she once relied on. Cast out into a much wider world, she has to decide what she believes, whom she can trust, and what a useful life might look like after loss.
Nothing comes easily.
Tathea travels through different lands and social worlds, meeting people whose needs and choices challenge her old assumptions. The story has magic, danger, courtly conflict, and spiritual questions, but its focus stays close to Tathea's growth. She is not presented as flawless. She makes mistakes, learns through pain, and has to live with the effect her choices have on others.
The central struggle is between forces of light and darkness, though Perry treats that conflict through individual acts of courage, pride, compassion, and betrayal. Faith is part of the series, and readers will notice how strongly the books care about moral responsibility, free will, and the difficulty of forgiving either oneself or another person.
The One Thing More sits alongside the larger fantasy story as a shorter work. Come Armageddon returns to Tathea's world centuries later, when a final confrontation between good and evil seems unavoidable. Tathea's long life gives the sequel a different perspective, as old lessons are tested by new people and larger dangers.
These are earnest, quest-shaped books rather than light comic fantasy. Expect invented countries, travel, political struggles, mystical ideas, and characters facing choices that have both private and public consequences. The pace is often more reflective than Perry's mysteries, especially when Tathea is weighing what duty requires of her.
Begin with Tathea. It establishes the world, Tathea's losses, and the beliefs that guide the rest of the sequence. Read The One Thing More as a companion piece, then move to Come Armageddon for the later, more sweeping conflict.
