Tara K. Harper is an American science fiction and fantasy novelist whose books put people in close, sometimes uneasy contact with animals, wilderness, and strange technology. Her first published novel, Wolfwalker, appeared in 1990 and introduced the telepathic wolf bonds that would shape much of her fiction.

Harper was born in 1961. Public biographical notes do not give much detail about her early years, but they do show a practical path alongside her fiction: she graduated from the University of Oregon and worked in high tech, specializing in research-and-development test and measurement.

That day-job experience matters because her novels often let science and fantasy share the same room. Telepathy, alien contact, viruses, and other unusual abilities are treated as problems people must live with, not just decorations around an adventure.

She likes putting characters outdoors, where every skill has consequences.

The Wolfwalker books form the largest part of her fiction. They begin with healer Dion and the wolf Gray Hishn, whose mental link makes them a formidable scouting team but also ties Dion to the needs and dangers of the wolf packs. Shadow Leader and Storm Runner keep the pressure on as war, borders, and the survival of wolves draw Dion further from a simple healer's life.

The later books broaden that world. Grayheart follows Rezsia, a less experienced wolfwalker investigating unexplained deaths, while Wolf's Bane and Silver Moons, Black Steel return to Dion's struggle with forces connected to the world's alien past. In Wolf in Night, a new generation takes the foreground through Nori, a wilderness scout who is drawn into a fresh danger.

The bond is never a shortcut.

Harper also wrote the two-book Cat Scratch sequence, beginning with Cat Scratch Fever. On the colonized world of Risthmus, Tsia hopes to become a Guide, only to form a forbidden telepathic connection with the planet's wild cats. Cataract continues her story, keeping the focus on survival, trust, and the cost of a bond other people fear.

For readers who want a self-contained story, Lightwing follows Kiondili Wae, a gifted telepathic research assistant working on a faster-than-light drive. It is a science fiction setup, but the personal problem is familiar from Harper's other books: a capable young woman must prove herself when the people around her misread her abilities.

Her life outside fiction has included creative-writing teaching in alternative schools, wilderness-skills training for young people, and service on the board of a youth treatment center. Biographical notes also mention martial arts, hiking, kayaking, sailing, painting, stone sculpture, violin, and music composition.
